MIDDLETOWN, CT -- For their fourth straight victory, the Williams College Ephs (ranked #10 in NCAA DIII) edged the Wesleyan University Cardinals (ranked #5) in a tight match against their highest-ranked NESCAC opponent to this point this season.
While the Cardinals gained a 2-1 edge in doubles play, the Ephs' strong 4-2 performance in singles led to a victory against a formidable Wesleyan team. The win propelled the Ephs to 4-0 in NESCAC play, bringing their overall record to 7-4.
In doubles play, the Cardinals got off to a quick start. Andrew Finkelman and Marcus Sweeney won convincingly over the Williams tandem of senior Deepak Indrakanti and sophomore Austin Barr, 8-1. Next, the Wesleyan duo of Princeton Carter and Jonathan Holtzman took down Williams sophomores Arturo Kam and Calvin Chung by an 8-4 margin. But the Ephs got on the board when the reliable duo of junior Alex Taylor and freshman Peter Frelinghuysen defeated Wesleyan's Adrian Woji and Noah Lilenthal, 8-7.
Despite losing 2 of 3 matches in doubles play, the Ephs made up for it with a 4-2 edge in singles. Williams won the first three matches in singles play, with Barr, Chung and Indrakanti each winning against the Cardinals' Peter Anker, Lilianthal and Roji, respectively. While Barr and Chung each earned their victories in two sets, Indrakanti came back from a 2-6 loss in the first set to win each of the next two sets 6-3. Wesleyan countered with Finkelman and Carter defeating Kam and Taylor -- each in a close match decided in three sets -- but the Ephs earned the overall victory when Frelilnghuysen defeated Zach Lieb in another hard-earned, three-set victory.
"Great battle against a very tough team," said Eph assistant coach Felix Sun following the victory. "Played with great energy from everyone and really stepped it up today. Looking forward to tomorrow's match against Middlebury."
Tomorrow, the Ephs look to extend their winning streak to five against the Middlebury Panthers.
