WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- After dropping the first match of the weekend against Bowdoin, the Williams College Ephs (ranked #9 in NCAA DIII) bounced back to defeat the Bates College Bobcats (unranked in NCAA DIII), 7-2.
The Ephs controlled both singles and doubles play, losing only one match in each to snap their three-match losing streak. The victory brought Williams to 7-7 (.500) to finish off the regular season, including a 5-3 record against NESCAC opponents.
The Ephs won two of three doubles matches, winning two lopsided affairs while dropping a close one. Junior Alex Taylor and freshman Peter Frelinghuysen took care of business against Bates' Ben Eckardt and Nick Glover in an 8-3 win, followed by freshman Kirun Cheung and sophomore Austin Barr defeating the Bates duo of Duane Davis and Dylan Davis, 8-2. The Bobcats' Jacob Kaupilla and Alex Kennedy, however, squeezed out a tight win against Eph junior Ananth Raghavan and sophomore Arturo Kam.
In singles play, however, the Ephs earned a significant, 5-1 advantage. Kam, Raghavan, Taylor, Frelinghuysen and sophomore Noah Reich each won their respective matches. Each of the Ephs' victories came in two sets or fewer, with Frelinghuysen's win coming in a shortened, one-set match. Additionally, none of the five Eph victors allowed their opponent to win more than three games in a given set. The lone Bates victory came when Kaupilla defeated Barr in a 7-5, 6-3 affair.
"We played with confidence from start to finish and were able to get the job done," remarked Eph assistant coach Felix Sun following the win. It was a strong way to end the regular season. Looking forward to a week of practice and then the NESCAC tournament."
This Friday, the Ephs travel to Middlebury College to kick off the NESCAC championships. The championships will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (May 3, 4, and 5).
