WATERVILLE, ME – The Williams College Men's Tennis team completed the third and final day of the 2019 ITA Division III New England Regional Tennis Championship on Sunday. The three-day competition is the only one the Ephs will compete in this fall.

An array of difficult competitors from across the New England region whittled Eph representation down to the two doubles partners. Senior Alex Taylor advanced the furthest in singles play but was ultimately eliminated in the round of 16 on Saturday.

Entering day three, Taylor and sophomore partner Peter Frelinghuysen had defeated three opponents to earn their spot in the semifinals. Their last victory on Saturday was a well fought OT win over Amherst opponents. The other Eph duo of senior Ananth Raghavan and junior Arturo Kam rolled through their competition with wider margins. The nature of the single elimination tournament meant the teammates were pitted against one another for the semifinal match.

The semifinals took place at 9:00 am on Sunday. The match was evenly balanced for the many of the sets, but Taylor and Frelinghuysen ultimately came out on top to earn their spot in the finals.  Head Coach Brian Grodecki commented on the collective performance: "Both teams competed brilliantly in the doubles semifinal and it was a riveting back-and-forth affair with a lot of great points."

In the finals, Taylor and Frelinghuysen took on Tufts duo Boris Sorkin and Josh Belandres who clinched their spot with an OT 8-7(2) victory in the semifinals. The ensuing match involved three sets in which the Ephs pair lost the first and were forced to regroup for the remaining two. Their resilience paid off with a victory to give them the championship position with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Coach Grodecki was particularly pleased with their perseverance: "It was exciting to see Alex and Peter fight back in the final as well and clinch the title--they're two of our hardest workers, and I expect more success from this partnership."

The partnership will get more chances to compete this fall. Their victory at this tournament earned them entry to the next level in which they will play ITA winners across regions. That tournament will be held in Georgia once all other regional tournaments have been completed.

Aside from the Taylor and Frelinghuysen duo, Williams Men's tennis will return to competition in March of 2020 during their annual spring break trip. Coaches Dan Greenberg and Felix Sun will be returning from sabbatical in time for the season.
