ROME, GA. -- Ephs Alex Taylor '20 and Peter Frelinghuysen '22 trailed early against Nyathi Motlojoa and Cole Schneider from Luther College, but the New England Regional Doubles Champions successfuly came back to win the match, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 and advance to the second round of the ITA tournament.
After claiming the ITA regional championship on September 30, Taylor and Frelinghuysen -- ranked 9th on the ITA's website for NCAA DIII men's doubles -- sought to advance in the ITA national tournament. Though Taylor and Frelinghuysen fell behind early, they fought back to win the second set by a lopsided 6-1 margin. The Ephs' momentum continued in the third and final set, and the Taylor-Frelinguysen tandem advanced to 6-0 in ITA play this year. It was their second three-set victory this season, the other being a close match against Tufts that also saw Taylor and Frelinghuysen come back from losing the first set.
"Our opponents came out playing some confident tennis, and after being down a set, we showed some nice resolve and made the necesarry adjustments to pull it out," commented Eph assistant coach Brian Grodecki '18 following the nail-biting victory. "Looking forward to two more tough battles tomorrow."
Tomorrow at 1:00PM, Taylor and Frelinghuysen look to advance to the final four of the ITA national tournament.
