Springfield, MA—The Williams Track and Field team traveled to Springfield College today, opening their season at a low key meet. Many of the team's athletes are still adjusting to training and did not compete today. They will open their seasons in January at the Little Three Championship. Although no team scores were tallied, the Ephs competed against athletes from several other schools, including Springfield, Stevens Institute, and Westfield State.
The 2017-18 season began with the weight throw. Magnus Herweyer '20 finished 2nd with a personal best of over 2 meters, 14.64m. Mykel Miller '20 showed impressive improvement as well, with a personal best of nearly 3 meters, finishing 6th with a throw of 13.09m. Herweyer threw the exact same distance, 14.64m, in the shot put, finishing 1st. Liam Pembroke was 4th with 13.61, Miller 7th with 11.99m.
In the pole vault, Pierceson Brown '18 and Marshall Borrus '20 each cleared solid heights to start the season. Brown was 2nd, clearing 4.10m, while Borrus cleared 3.65m. In the high jump, Williams showed early strength, with first-year Dan Renwick '21 placing first, clearing 1.93m. James Dunivan '19 was 2nd, also clearing 1.93m.
On the track, the Ephs continued to show early promise. Renwick claimed his second victory of the day in the 60m hurdles, running a time of 8.61 seconds. Jeremy Thaller '19 and Trent Davis '21 each had strong performances, finishing 2nd and 6th respectively in times of 7.13 and 7.22.
Jackson Ennis '20 kept the good performances for the Ephs rolling with another victory in the 1000, in a time of 2:39.02. In the 500, first-year Cole O'Flaherty '21 totaled another win for the Ephs, running a solid time of 1:07.36. In the 300, a trio of Dysron Marshall '20, Karol Regula '21, and Eliot Fong '19 finished 6th, 7th, and 8th, in times of 38.09, 38.16, and 38.36.
The Ephs showed their distance prowess as the end of the meet loomed. In the 800, Tristan Colaizzi '20, Alex Cowen '18, and Felix Biwott '21 each ran strong races. Colaizzi and Cowen negative split a comfortable 1:59.19 and 2:00:19, while Biwott ran an impressive 2:04.32 in his first track race of his life. In the 3000m, Ben Hearon '20 won his first collegiate race in a time of 8:52.23, while Jake Lange and Kenneth Marshall also had solid performances, finishing in 3rd and 5th in times of 8:59.95 and 9:02.61.
In the 4x400, Williams finished the meet with a bang, winning the race in a time of 3:30.33, concluding competition at Springfield. Four Ephs traveled to Smith College today, competing in the 5000m. Ryan Cox '20 had a substantial personal best, winning the race in a time of 15:11.56. William McGovern '20, Nick Gannon '20, and Samuel Wischnewsky '20 all busted their rust today, finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in times of 15:44.59, 16:12.17, 16:17.16.
The Ephs will have another five weeks to train before returning to action on January 13, 2018, at the Little Threes Championship, hosted by Wesleyan.
