WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Williams College three-sport, four-year standout, and captain Tobias Muellers '18 (Burlington, Vt.) has been named the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country/Track & Field.

Muellers was accorded the prestigious national academic honor in a vote by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Muellers majored in Chemistry and graduated from Williams earlier this month with a cumulative GPA of 3.91. 2018 marks the second consecutive year that Muellers has earned First Team Academic All-America honors in Cross Country/Track & Field.

Additionally Muellers is the 12th Eph men's cross country/track& field Academic All-America honoree and one of 48 Ephs so honored since 1993.

Most recently Muellers captured the decathlon title at the NCAA DIII Track & Field Outdoor Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin, breaking and extending his Williams College record scoring 6,969 points.

Hard to believe that a three-sport, four-year letterman, four-time All-American, and captain had pretty much decided not to compete in athletics at Williams when he first thought of applying for Early Decision.

Only a reminder call from then Eph head men's soccer coach Mike Russo informing Muellers that the Early Decision deadline was fast approaching encouraged Muellers to reconsider participating in soccer at Williams.

After his first fall experience with the Williams College soccer team Muellers was inspired to talk to the Eph track and field coaches to see if they needed a 400m runner. From seriously considering not competing in athletics at Williams to earning 12 Varsity letters, indoor and outdoor track All-America honors, and winning the 2018 decathlon title is not exactly the usual recipe for a legendary athletics career.

"Tobias' story is one of consistency," stated Eph men's track & field head coach Ethan Barron. "He tackled the little challenges and little battles everyday, chipping away. He did this both academically and athletically. That's what set him up for the big moments that most other people witness. Tobias' greatest effect as a leader is demonstrating exactly this. That overcoming is more about a refusal to give in than it is about possessing some level of Herculean strength."

"Williams provided me with incredible guides, in the form of professors, coaches, deans, and facilities staff, who helped me grow both on and off of the track," noted Muellers.

Mullers has previously earned Academic All-America honors in soccer and track & field and in 2017 he won the NCAA Elite 90 award at the indoor championships for possessing the highest cumulative GPA of all male competitors at that championship event.

In addition to owning the Eph record in the decathlon, this past winter Muellers set the Eph record in the heptathlon tallying 4,906 points.
