WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Three-sport (men's soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field), 4-year letterman, and captain Tobias Muellers (Burlington, Vt.) has been named the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA DIII National Scholar Athlete of the Year.
At the 2018 NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Muellers won the decathlon by posting a Williams school record 6,969 points.
To win the USTFCCCA National Scholar Athlete of the Year Award the athlete must be a national champion in an individual event and possess the highest cumulative GPA .Those who win multiple individual titles in a single championship are chosen over those who win one. If no individual champion has a cumulative GPA that reaches the All-Academic standard, those who were runner-up are considered next and so on.
Previously Muellers earned Third Team Academic All-American honors in soccer from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and twice earned Cross Country/Track and Field First Team Academic All-America honors.
Additionally, Muellers was also named the 2018 Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country/Track & Field.
Muellers compiled a 3.91 cumulative GPA while majoring in chemistry.
