Men's Track and Field Opens the Season at Smith Winter Classic

Northhampton, MA—The Williams men's track and field team opened the season at the 2018 Smith Winter Classic. This meet served as an opportunity for Ephs to practice competition and set baseline marks for the remainder of the year. A number of Ephs did not compete, while those that did often competed in events outside of their usual specialties.

Marshall Borrus '20 started the 2018-19 season off for the Ephs in the pole vault. He finished 2nd, clearing 3.65m. In the weight throw, co-captain Mykel Miller '20 and Scott Fineberg '22 had successful first outings, finishing 3rdand 4thin respective marks of 13.72m and 13.26m. Both returned for the shot put, finishing 4thand 6th, with marks of 12.27m and 10.82m.

A number of Ephs competed today in the long jump. Bariki Innis '21 finished 7th, with a mark of 6.23m, while Cole O'Flaherty '21, Will Kingham '22, and Jacob Rosenberg '22 finished 8th, 9th, and 10th, with marks of 6.15m, 6.10m, and 6.05m. Rosenberg would return for the triple jump, finishing 3rdthere with a mark of 11.73m. In the high jump, Danny Renwick '21 opened the season with a win, clearing 1.95m.

On the track, many Ephs also had successful starts to the year. The meet started with the 5000 meter run. Aidan Ryan '21 and Ryan Cox '20 worked well together, running the #1 and #2 best times in the nation so far this season (which began today), finishing in 14:45.90 and 14:49.70. Not far behind, Elias Lindgren '22 ran a fantastic debut 5000, finishing in 15:21.10 for 4thoverall. Matthew Peacock '21 and Chris Avila '21 were 5thand 6th, in times of 15:37.50 and 15:43.90.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Renwick and Ben Telicki '22 each competed, finishing 4thand 6thin both the prelims and finals, in times of 8.81 seconds and 9.48 seconds in the prelims, and 8.99 seconds and 9.15 seconds in the finals. In the 60-meter dash, O'Flaherty, Trent Hall '21, and co-captain Jeremy Thaller '19 all qualified for the finals. In the finals, O'Flaherty was 4thin 7.20 seconds, Hall 6thin 7.22 seconds, and Thaller 8thin 7.29 seconds.

In the 400 meters, Dysron Marshall '20 finished 3rdin 52.88 seconds. He was followed by Chris Bassett '22, who finished 4thin 53.65 seconds, John Zhou '22, who finished 6thin 54.76 seconds, and Isaki Wada-Law '21, who finished 7thin 54.83 seconds. The latter three returned for the 200 meter dash. There, Bassett finished 9th, in 24.33 seconds, while Wada-Law was 15th, in 25.26 seconds, and Zhou 16th, in 25.47 seconds. In the 600 meter run, Elliott Fong '19 and Nolan Holley '22 finished 4thand 5th, in times of 1:28.52 and 1:30.81 seconds.

Closing out the meet were the 3000 meter run and the 4x400 meter relays. In the 3000, Ryan Watson '22 ran a patient race, striking in the last 600 meters to win in 9:09.52. Keith Grossman '22 was 7th, in 9:41.58. In the 4x400, the Ephs fielded two different relay teams. The team of Renwick, Holley, Zhou, and Marshall finished 2ndin 3:32.00, while the team of Bassett, Innis, Telicki, and O'Flaherty finished 4th, in 3:33.71.

The Ephs will return to competition January 12, 2019, at the Little Three Championship, hosted by Wesleyan.
