Point Loma, CA—The men's track and field team started the spring season off in sunny San Diego, at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational. This meet served as an opportunity for Ephs to get in early qualifying marks in their chosen events, try off events, and continue a challenging training cycle.
Competing the previous two days at the UC Riverside Multi, Ben Telicki '22 had a great debut in the decathlon. The first-year set numerous personal bests, finishing with 4,997 points, for 13th overall in a field that was otherwise almost entirely composed of DI athletes.
The meet began with the field events. In the hammer throw, Scott Fineberg '22 threw 42.16m in his hammer debut for Williams, good for 9th. Co-captain Mykel Miller '20 threw 37.62m, while Frank Scheck '20 threw 37.28m, for 13thand 14th. Scheck and Fineberg each returned for the shot put and discus. In the shot, Scheck had a mark of 11.25m, for 19th, while Fineberg put the shot 10.42m, for 21st. In the discus, Scheck threw 39.95m, a personal best, for 7th, while Fineberg threw 31.28m, for 22nd.
In the high jump, co-captain Ian Kagame '19 continued the momentum from a strong indoor season, clearing 1.93m, for 2nd. In the long jump, Will Kingham '22 jumped a big personal best, with a mark of 6.58m, for 5th. Bariki Innis '21 was 18thin the same event, with a mark of 5.97m, while Carson Kurtz '22 was 21st, with a mark of 5.78m. Innis and Kingham returned for the triple jump along with John Zhou '22. Innis finished 6th, with Kingham and Zhou 7thand 8th, with respective marks of 12.75m, 12.43m, and 12.37m.
On the track, the Ephs also had a strong showing. In the 1500m, Aidan Ryan '21 had a fantastic performance, pulling away for the win in a personal best of 3:50.86, establishing a meet record in the process. Tristan Colaizzi '20 was 8thoverall in 4:01.29, while Austin Anderson '19 and Ryan Watson '22 each had a great race in the second heat, finishing 1stand 2nd—and 10thand 11thoverall—in 4:01.79 and 4:02.06. Also finishing in the top 20 were Jett Ballantyne '22, 13thin 4:05.15, and Peter Kirgis '20, 18thin 4:07.41. Ryan and Kirgis returned for the 800, along with Sam Schraver '22. Ryan finished 1st, this time in 1:54.62, while Schraver was 6thin 1:59.96, and Kirgis 7thin 2:00.71.
Colaizzi returned for the 400, along with Elliott Fong '19, Chris Bassett '22, and Nolan Holley '22. Colaizzi finished in 13th, in 50.77, while Fong was 17th, in 51.04, Bassett 22nd, in 51.82, and Holley 24th, in 52.45. Bassett and Holley returned for the 200, along with Karol Regula '21. Bassett was 31st, in 23.51, while Holley was 34th, in 23.77, and Regula 42nd, in 23.99 seconds.
In the 100 meter dash, co-captain Jeremy Thaller '19 began a strong outdoor campaign with an 11.18 second, 12thplace showing. Trent Hall '21 was 27thin 11.69 seconds, while Regula was 35th, in 11.86 seconds. In the 400 hurdles, Zhou was 11thin 59.66 seconds, while Isaki Wada Law '21 was 18thin 1:02.60.
Several Ephs competed in the 5000. Nick Gannon '20, co-captain Lucas Estrada '20, Jacob Kahrs '19, and Elias Lindgren '22 each handled the hot pace to finish 5ththrough 8th, in respective times of 15:10.70, 15:18.81, 15:21.02, and 15:24.46. Also finishing under 15:30 were co-captain Zeke Cohen '19, whose fast last mile brought him in in 15:27.28, and Jake Lange '20, in 15:29.72, in 11thand 13th.
Immediately after the 5000, a number of those athletes competed in the 4x400, along with other Ephs. Williams' three teams finished 5th, 8th, 11th, and 16th, in respective times of 3:25.08, 3:33.69, 3:36.61, and 3:47.83.
The Ephs will return to competition next Saturday, March 30, at the California Collegiate Invitational, hosted by UCSD.
