Men's Track and Field Competes at All New England Championship

New Haven, CT—The men's track and field team competed today and yesterday at the NEICAAA Championship, which was hosted by Southern Connecticut State. All colleges and universities in New England were eligible to compete in this meet, regardless of NCAA classification. This meet therefore served as an opportunity for Ephs to use the high level of competition to try to hit qualifying marks for the NCAA Championship (top-20 of declared entries).

On Friday, Aidan Ryan '21 and Nick Gannon '20 competed in the 5000 meters. Gannon ran a smart race, putting himself in position at the front of his heat, ultimately finishing 2ndin the heat and 12thoverall in 15:13.14. Ryan, meanwhile, put on a clinic, easing into the lead of his heat after the first mile and pulling away to win by 22 seconds, finishing in 14:23.22. Ryan's time ranks 8thin the nation, and is a safe qualifying mark for NCAAs. In the 400 prelims, Cole O'Flaherty '21 ran a tough race, finishing 3rdin his heat in 49.82 seconds.

On Saturday, a number of Ephs competed. In the triple jump, Bariki Innis '21 jumped 13.15m, finishing 16th. Not far behind was John Zhou '22, who jumped 13.06m, finishing 18th. In the high jump, co-captain Ian Kagame '19 cleared the bar at 1.91m on his second attempt, finishing 9th. In the 1500, Tristan Colaizzi '20 ran a gutsy race, putting himself in position to contend for the win and a nationals qualifying spot. Elias Lindgren '22 was close behind throughout. Ultimately, Colaizzi and Lindgren finished in 6thand 7threspectively in 3:52.71 and 3:53.81, a seasonal best for the former and a personal best for the latter. Colaizzi is currently 18thon the list, with Lindgren 30th. Each will need to run another 1500 to try to lower their times to ensure a bid for NCAAs. Peter Kirgis '20 ran well in his heat of the 1500, finishing in 3:59.24 for 14thoverall, continuing a seasonal progression from 4:07.41 less than two months ago. In the 3000 steeplechase, Ryan Watson '20 ran a tough race, finishing 2ndin his heat and 16thoverall in 9:50.42. In the seeded heat, Jacob Kahrs '19 finished in 9:29.66, finishing in 7thoverall, while Jake Lange '21 finished in 9:42.51 for 15th.

The Ephs will return to competition this upcoming Wednesday, May 15, at the Williams Last Chance meet.
