Williamstown, MA—The Williams men's track and field team competed today at the Williams Final Qualifier meet. As the title may suggest, this meet serves a final chance for athletes to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship. Athletes need to secure a time in the top-20 for Division III to qualify.
The meet started in the field. In the men's javelin, Paul Sheils '22 finished 5th, throwing the javelin 43.25m on his first through. In the triple jump, Bariki Innis '21 was 3rd, leaping 13.13m. He was followed by teammates John Zhou '22 and Ben Telicki '22, who finished 5thand 6threspectively, in 12.77m and 12.46m. In the long jump, Will Kingham '22 leapt 6.42m for 3rd, with Sam Mecha '21 in 5thin 5.75m. Carson Kurtz '22 was 4thin the pole vault, clearing 4.28m. Co-captain Ian Kagame '19 closed out his career with a win, clearing the bar at 1.98m. Danny Renwick '21 was 2nd, clearing the same height as Kagame, although after more attempts.
On the track, the Ephs had a very successful day. In the 100-meter dash, Kingham was 7th, in 11.36 seconds. Telicki returned for the 110 hurdles, finishing in 16.57 seconds in the prelims and 16.16 seconds in the final, finishing 5th. In the 1500, Aidan Ryan '21 set a fast, even pace from the front, leading a line of Ephs behind him. Ryan finished in 3:49.83, a personal best by a second, and the #9 time in the country this year. Just behind was Tristan Colaizzi '20 in 3:51.28, also a personal best by a second. Colaizzi's time is #14 on the list, and also looks to be a safe qualifying mark. Elias Lindgren '22 finished 3rdin his own personal best of 3:53.58, followed by Ryan Watson '22, co-captain Lucas Estrada '20, Peter Kirgis '20, Jett Ballantyne '22, Will Young '21, co-captain Zeke Cohen '19, and Nick Gannon '20, in paces 5th-8th, 10th-12thand times of 3:59.35, 3:59.59, 3:59.66, 4:02.15, 4:07.80, 4:08.28, and 4:10.05, respectively.
In the 400, Cole O'Flaherty '22 finished 5thin 49.99, with Eliott Fong '19 6thin 50.83. In the 800, Sam Schraver '22 finished 6thin 1:59.82 with a strong kick. And in the 5000, Matthew Peacock '21 finished 2ndin 15:49.32, followed by Franklin Reilly '22 in 15:55.22. David Azzara '19 closed out his career with a bang, running a 16 second personal best to run 15:55.61, rounding out the Ephs in 4th.
The Ephs will return to competition Thursday, May 23, at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Outdoor Championship. The meet will be hosted at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
