RIVERSIDE, CA -- It nearly got away, but the Williams softball team earned its first sweep of the season Friday, topping La Sierra University 5-1 in the first game and then withstanding a seven-run comeback by the hosts in game two to preveil in eight innings, 11-9.
In game one, Eph senior Megan Casey made her first appearance of the season and threw four hitless innings of relief to earn the victory from the circle. Emalie Rott started and pitched the first three innings, allowing just one hit and one run.
Williams trailed 1-0 entering the top of the fouth, but struck for five runs to take a commanding lead. Ally Ensor got things started with a double to right-center. After advancing to third, she scored when Melissa Cenedejas laid down a bunt single. Merrilee Weston singled and with two outs, Pricilla Pino singled to shortstop to score the second run. Taylor Donz then bunted for a hit that brought Weston home with the third run. An error by La Sierra allowed the final two runs to cross.
Rott walked the first two batters of the bottom of the fouth and Casey replaced her, striking out Vanessa McGowan and inducing Pam Gomez to hit into a double play to end the threat. She retired nine of the next 10 batters, with the only runner coming on an error. She did not walka batter and struck out three.
Williams had eight hits by eight different players in the win.
In the much wilder nightcap, Williams had an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh but La Sierra rallied for seven runs to tie the game. The Ephs scored three runs on just one hit - and RBI single by Casey Kramer -- to take an 11-8 lead an held on for the win.
Cramer was 3 for 5 with two RBI. Ensor was 2 for4 with three runs scored. Graebner was 2 fr 4 with two runs scored. Legan was 2 for 5. Kaitlin Dinet had two RBI.
