REDLANDS, CA -- The Williams College softball team slipped to 4-8 on the year Monday, dropping a doubleheader to the University of Redlands 7-3 and 6-2.
The Ephs play at Whittier College Tuesday with the first game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. PST.
Williams dropped the first game, 7-3. The Ephs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Theresa Legan drew a lead-off walk from Redlands starter Kayla Uphold. She moved to second when Kacey Cramer's grounder to short was misplayed. Ensor then hit a ball back to the pitcher, who threw it away, allowing Legan to score. Melissa Cendejas then singled up the middle to score the second run.
Redlands answered with four in its half of the first off Williams starter Megan Casey. Sarah Beeman's two-run triple tied the game, and Nikoll Sharp's subsequent double gave the home team a 3-2 lead. Linda Park plated Sharp with a two-out single.
The Ephs trailed 7-2 entering the top of the sixth when Ali Graebner drew a one-out walk. Pricilla Pino pinch-ran for her. Cendejas singled and after a forceout, Merrilee Weston's two-out single scored Pino.
Casey took the loss, allowing 11 hits and three walks while fanning four in 5 1/3 innings of work. Ophold earned the win, throwing a complete-game four-hitter for Redlands.
Cendejas was 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Ephs.
Williams took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap when Cramer, the second batter of the game, homered to right field. The Bulldogs scored twice in te bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Down 3-1, the Ephs cut the lead to one when Cramer doubled home Legan in the fifth.
However, Redlands scored twice in its half of the fifth and once more in the sixth for the 6-2 win.
Cramer was 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Ephs. Emma Harrington took the loss, allowing nine hits and six walks in five innings of work. She allowed five runs, all earned, and struck out two.
