KEENE, N.H. — Keene State used three home runs to power past the Williams College softball team 8-1 in the first game of a would-be doubleheader Wednesday. The Owls led the nightcap, 4-2, in the top of the fifth when rains halted play.
Williams slipped to 7-15 overall. The Ephs are scheduled to play at rival Amherst Friday. Keene State improved to 9-8 overall.
In the opener, Keene State took a 1-0 lead in the first when three-hitter Meryl Ragaini launched a two-out, bases-empty solo home run to centerfield. The Owls tacked on two more in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0.
Williams rallied in its half of the fifth inning. Lindsay Precht drew a lead-off walk from Keene starter Meariah Crisp. Priscilla Pino followed with a single to center. Amanda Correnti's groundout moved the runners to second and third with one out and after a strikeout, Theresa Legan's slap hit scored Precht to make it 3-1.
Keene answered that run very quickly however, as it scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 7-1. Morgan Fallon had the big blow, a three-run homer to left that made the score 6-1.
Crisp held the Ephs at bay, hurling a complete-game five-hitter while walking two and striking out five. Fallon was 2 for 4 with four RBI for the Owls in the win.
Legan led Williams, going 3 for 3 with an RBI from the lead-off spot. Senior Megan Casey took the loss, going the first 4 2/3 innings and allowing eight hits and seven runs, all earned, while walking three and striking out two.
Keene led the second game 4-2 in the top of the fifth when the game was suspended due to rain.
