WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Williams College sophomore Emma Harrington tossed a three-hit shutout Friday to lead the Ephs past Hamilton College, 3-0, in a NESCAC West battle on Cole Field.
Williams improved to 14-19 with the win, 6-4 in the West. Hamilton fell to 11-19 overall, 1-8 in the division. The two teams hook up tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Friday the Ephs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Erica Li beat out a slapper to short. She stole second and scored when Williams first-year Kacey Cramer rocketed a two-out triple to right center field.
Williams extended its lead to 3-0 in the third when Theresa Legan and Li singled back-to-back to start the frame. Ali Graebner's grounder forced Legan at third for the first out, but the runners pulled off a double steal and, with two outs, sophomore Mo Frank grounded a single just out of the reach of diving Hamilton shortstop Ellie Kiernan and into center field for a two-run single.
Harrington sailed through the first three frames, striking out six batters. Hamilton's Sam Miller led off the fourth with a double, but two pop outs and one groundout later, Harrington left the runner stranded.
The Continentals biggest threat came in the top of the fifth after Harrington had retired the first two batters. Chelsea Merritt was hit by a pitch and went to second when Olivia Gozdz walked. Harrington struck out the next btter looking to end the inning.
Li went 3 for 3 for Williams, which had six hits. Kelly Leonard took the loss for Hamilton, allowing only six hits through six innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out two. Harrington allowed just the three hits through seven, walking one and fanning one.
