CLERMONT, Fla. -- Junior right-hander Emma Harrington fired an opening-day one-hitter Saturday as the Williams College softball team opened its season with a 4-0 shutout of Carleton before dropping the nightcap to Anderson (Ind.), 8-7.
The Ephs (1-1) scored single runs in the second and fifth then added two in the sixth on a pair of errors to build a 4-0 lead. Senior Theresa Legan had two of the Ephs' six hits.
Harrington gave up just a lone hit while walking four and striking ot six over seven innings of work. Taylor Donze backed Harrington up with some solid defense at third base.
In the second game, Williasm had a 7-4 lead entering the bottom of the sixth, but gave up three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh and fell 8-7. Emalie Rott got the start for Williams and went the first four innings, allowing six hits and one walk. Brooke Bovier made her collegiate debut and went 2 1/3 innings while giving up five runs, four earned. She walked four and struck out one.
First year outfielder Ashley Wirth had 2 OF assists from right field including one to gun down the go ahead run in the bottom of the 6th..
Legan again lead off with a walk and scored on a Ali Graebner hit in the first. Ali Michalik played 3B and was on base all three times up. She was 3-for-3 with a bunt single and a double and a triple. Kasey Cramer had a big two-run double in the 5th.
