WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — The Williams College softball team will host a four-team NCAA Regional beginning Friday, May 9th and extending through Sunday, May 11th, it was announced today by the NCAA.
The Ephs (24-11) received an at-large berth into the 2014 NCAA Div. III Tournament, one of 62 team selected and one of 20 teams to receive an at-large invite. It is their fourth NCAA appearance in history, their first since 2006, and the first time to be awarded hosting duties.
Joining Williams at the Williamstown Regional will be New England Collegiate Conference champion Lesley (21-13), Commonwealth Coast Conference champion Endicott (25-11-1) and fellow New England Small College Athletic Conference member Tufts University (37-3), which also won its conference championship last weekend in Williamstown by defeating Williams twice. The Jumbos are the defending national champions.
"It's exciting," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "To be one of the 62 teams still playing is a testament to our work ethic and the trust we have in each other. Our captains, Theresa Legan and Ali Graebner, have done an outstanding job guiding us this far. We're excited to extend our season and it's obviously great for our conference to have two teams here."
The 2014 NCAA Division III Championship starts a new tournament format; Whereas previously there were eight, multi-team regionals, leading directly to the final site, there are now 16 regionals with a double-elimination format. There will be two games Friday, three Saturday and one, or two if necessary, Sunday. The winners of those will advance to a best 2-out-of-3 super-regional, and the winners of the super-regional advance to the final site.
