Ephs open season with sweep of Occidental

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Williams College softball team started its season off with a bang Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader from Occidental College, 12-1 and 7-1.

Williams (2-0) faces Whittier College Monday in a single game beginning at 1 PM PST. Occidental fell to 5-17 on the season.

Williams senior Mo Frank went 5 for 7 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored in the sweep. Senior Emalie Rott tossed three shutout innings of relief, and senior Emma Harrington picked up her first win of the season in game one, a contest shortend to five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

In the nightcap, sophomore Brooke Boiver earned the win and helped herself out with a two-run single that gave Williams a 2-1 lead.

In the opener, the Ephs trailed 1-0 after four innings, but broke open the contest with a 12-run top of the fifth inning. Junior kacey Cramer had a double and a home run in the big innings, as well as four RBI.

Frank's RBI-single to left field tied the game for Williams, and Cramer followed with her double to make it 2-1 as Frank scored. Tayler Donze followed with an RBI-double for a 3-1 lead. After an error alowed a run to score, Melissa Cendejas roped an RBI-double and first-year Breanna Martinez lined an RBI-triple. A bunt single from Erica Li — who was 3 for 3 in the win — scored Martinez, and Alison Michalik singled home another run. Cramer capped the uprising with a three-run homer to left field.

Harrington earned the win, allowing three hits and no walks over four innings while striking out three. Rott finished up with one shutout frame.

Williams trailed 1-0 after one inning of the nightcap, but Bovier's two-run single in the top of the second gave the Ephs the lead for good. The Ephs added a run in the third when Frank ripped a triple and scored on the play. In the fourth, Ashley Wirth had an RBI-single that was followed by Michalik's two-run single that made it 6-1.

Bovier made it all stand up, allowing just one hit over five innings while walking two and striking out five. Rott finished up with two shutout innings of relief.
