Marshall hurls M.I.T. into regional final

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA-- MIT defeated Johnson & Wales (32-11) today 5-0 in Game 3 of the NCAA regional softball tournament. With nine strikeouts, two walks, and just three hits, pitcher Lexi Marshall led MIT (30-11) to the most single season wins in program history. MIT will advance to the tournament finals Sunday at noon.

After 4 scoreless innings the MIT offense caught fire in the top of the fifth and scored the first three runs of the game. MIT junior  Natalie Shifflet  started off the inning with a frozen rope to center field. Senior Tori Jensen singled to drive home the first RBI of the game, followed by sophomore Katie Shade and junior Ali Trueworthy.   

With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth, Jensen connected again with a perfectly placed blooper to right field to drive in Amber VanHemel and Shifflet for 2 RBI.

Johnson & Wales remained scoreless in all seven innings. They will face the winner of the Williams College vs Western Connecticut State matchup later this afternoon.

MIT's Natalie Shifflet went three for three on the day with three singles. Tori Jensen was two for four with 3 RBI. Katie Shade was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.
