WILLIAMSTOWN, MA-- The Williams College Ephs (33-10) shutout the Western Connecticut State University Colonials (23-18) 9-0 in Game 4 of the NCAA regional tournament. Freshmen pitcher Mackenzie Murphy earned her 15th win of the season with 6 strikeouts and just 5 hits on the game. Williams will play Johnson & Wales University at 3:30 pm.
The Ephs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard today as sophomore Lexi Curt singled to center field to drive home senior Erica Li for 1 RBI in the top of the first inning. Li singled again in the top of the second and scored the Ephs second run off of a wild pitch by Western's pitcher Alle Sabith.
In the top of the fifth inning the Ephs' offense exploded when freshmen pitcher Mackenzie Murphy singled to right field to drive home Erica Li and Jessica Kim. Murphy advanced to third on a fielding error by Western Connecticut right fielder and was driven home by sophomore slugger Lexi Curt to put the Ephs ahead 5-0.
In the top of the seventh the Ephs senior right fielder Tayler Donze smoked a single to left center to start a late game rally for the Ephs. Erica Li, Jessica Kim, Alejandra Magana connected for four consecutive singles. Kim earned an RBI for driving home Donze. With no outs and the bases loaded, Lexi Curt stepped up to the plate and drove in Li on a hard hit ground ball to shortstop. Sophomore Margo Beck walked with the bases loaded to send Kim across the plate for an RBI. Freshmen Kristina Alvarado then reached on a fielding error by Western Connecticut's second basemen to drive home Magana.
The Colonials were unable to cross home plate with just 5 hits on the game, and the game ended 9-0 in the Ephs favor.
Williams senior left fielder Erica Li went 4 for 4 on the day and scored four runs. Freshmen Jessica Kim was 3 for 4.
