COSTA MESA, CA — The Williams Colege softball team managed just 11 hits Monday as it suffered a doubleheader sweep at the ands of Vanguard University, 2-1 and 5-1.
Williams fell to 7-7 with the sweep. The Ephs conclude their West Coast trip woth a doubleheader at La Verne University Tuesday. The Lions improved to 34-8 on the season.
The day did not start off as if a power outage was in order. Kistina Alvarado led off the first game with a single and stole second. Lexi Curt followed with an RBI-double to give the Ephs a 1-0 lead. The Lions tied the game in their half of the first and it stayed 1-1 until the the seventh.
With two outs and runners on first and third, Taylor Wilson slapped a single down the left-field line to plate the game-winner. First year Rebecca Duncan took the loss, allowing six hits over 6 2/3 innings, while walking one and striking out four.
The Ephs had six hits in the game, with Alvarado and Duncan each going 2 for 3.
Vanguard jumped on Eph game two starter Emma Corbett for two runs in the bottom of the first and it would be more than enough for starter Vanessa Dwyer, who handcuffed the Ephs to the tune of five hits over seben innings while walking one and striking out one.
Down 3-0, Williams got o the board in the top of the fourth when Jessica Kim reached on an error, Mackenzie Murphy doubled and Riley Salvo reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kim. With runners on first and third and no outs, Dwyer got uncan to pop up in the infield, struck out Brenna Martinez and got out of the inning when Salvo was picked off first.
Corbett took the loss, allowing eight hits over four-plus innings, walking two and striking out no one. All five runs were charged to her, four earned. Murphy tossed two scoreless frames.
Duncan was 2 for 3 for the Ephs.
