MIDDLETOWN, CT. — The Williams College softball team completed its regular season with a final NESCAC West Division win Sunday, traveling to Wesleyan and winning 5-3.
The Ephs moved to 28-10 overall and finished 11-1 in conference divisional play. They had wrapped up a fourth consecutive division title Saturday with a sweep of Middlebury. Next up is the first round of the 2017 NESCAC Tournament Friday, when the Ephs take on Trinity at Bowdoin. Game time is 5 p.m.
The Ephs never trailed Sunday, taking a 3-0 lead in the first when Lexi Curt doubled to center, advanced to third on a single by Mackenzie Murphy and scored when Rebecca Duncan singled to right. With two outs and the bases loaded, Brenna Martinez delivered a key two-run single back up the middle.
Williams regained the lead wth one run in the sixth. With two outs, Casey Pelz reached on an error. She scored when Kristina Alvarado liend an RBI-single to center for a 4-3 lead. The Ephs added an insurance run in the seventh when Curt doubled, Duncan singled and Beck walked. With one out, Riley Salvo's RBI-single scored Curt.
The Ephs finished with 11 hits. Curt was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Duncan was 2 for 4 an RBI and a run scored. Duncan earned the victory, going five innings and allowing four hits and three runs, just two earned. She did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Murphy finished up with two hitless and scoreless innings, striking out two to earn her first save.
