HADLEY, MA. — Williams College senior Brenna Martinez (Arvada, Colo) and sophomore Rebecca Duncan (Simi Valley, CA) have been selected as the NESCAC Softball Player of the Week and NESCAC Pitcher of the Week for play ending Sunday, May 6th.
Martinez and Duncan helped Williams to its third consecutive NESCAC Tournament title and an automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA Div. III Tournament. The Ephs will host a regional tournament this weekend, Friday, May 11th through Sunday, May 13th, welcoming Amherst College, Husson University and Western New England University to Cole Field for the double-elimination tourney.
The Ephs defeated Trinity 7-1 in the conference quarterfinals Saturday, and later in the day, eliminated Tufts, 5-1, in the semifinals. Sunday, they rallied to defeat Bowdoin 5-3 in the tournament's championship game. Martinez recorded a hit in every NESCAC Tournament game, batting .444 with a 1.111 slugging percentage, behind two home runs and four RBIs. She also scored three runs. In a 5-1 semifinal win over Tufts, her three-run home run erased a 1-0 deficit. In the championship game, her solo home run in the fifth put the Ephs on the board. In addition, she did not make an error in 14 total chances at second base.
Duncan went 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA as the Ephs claimed the 2018 NESCAC Tournament Championship. She threw a complete-game four-hitter in a 5-1 win over Tufts, allowing three walks and striking out three, then tossed a three-hitter in a 5-3 win over Bowdoin in the championship game, walking two while striking out six to improve to 15-3 on the season.
