Franconia, NH -- The Ephs raced giant slalom today at Cannon Mountain on day one of the University of New Hampshire Carnival.  The track was firm and grippy and the Alpine Ski Team laid down some fast times to start off the weekend.

The women's team showed strong skiing today with three athletes in the top 30. Sophomore Maddie Dekko led the team with a career best carnival GS finish of 15th place.  Senior Hannah Hunsaker showed solid skiing with a 23rdplace finish, and freshman Hannah Trudeau skied to 28thplace.  Head coach Kelsey Levine was psyched with the good skiing from the women's team today:"I couldn't be more excited for the women - Maddie Dekko has been skiing really good GS in training but put down a race today so far above any she has done in that event. Hannah Hunsaker is making her way back from injury and is making huge strides each run. And Hannah Trudeau, who has had difficulty finding the finish line in the past has stepped up her tactics to take advantage of her pace."

The men were once again led by Junior Paul Sheils who finished in 24thplace.  Junior Cole Janco started with bib 73 this morning and finished an impressive 34th place.  Rounding out the men's squad were Senior Bryan Bailey and Junior Will Kannegieser who finished 40thand 49threspectively.  Levine commented on the men's team:"To have Paul have two back to back top 30s is great in GS. He is solidifying his start position and I'm excited to see him step up the tempo each week."

Williams finished day one in 6th place out of the 13 team field with 122 points, Dartmouth leads the field by 68 points with 268 points.

The Ephs head back to Cannon Mountain tomorrow to race slalom.
