CONCORD, NH – After a season full of fear of frost bit ears, the balmy weather in New Hampshire has been an unexpected and not entirely unwanted surprise. Ski waxing is very tricky in these tropical conditions but head coach Jason Lemieux and assistant coach Garrett Garberich worked their magic on the skis so their athletes could work their magic on the course.
The women commenced the day with their 10k individual start skate race. After completing the two-lap course that entailed a few swimming pool-esque sections, junior Ingrid Thyr lead the Ephwomen, finishing in 17th place, only 2 seconds in front of teammate sophomore Magdalen York in 18th. These two season bests for Thyr and York strongly suggest even faster times as the season progresses. Senior captain Sonya Jampel followed her teammates, finishing in a strong 25th place. The points awarded by these three WILLIAMS NORDIC women resulted in the Ephwomen scoring 4th place, only 18 points behind Colby on the podium.
After their race was delayed 15 minutes so race officials had time to shovel more snow over rapidly forming puddles, the WILLIAMS NORDIC men began their 15k individual start skate race. With the womens teams' exuberant encouragement fueling their fire, the mens team raced into 2nd place. This is a huge season best for the WILLIAMS NORDIC mens team! Leading the men was senior Braden Becker who scored 4th place, only 10 seconds out of a podium finish. Closely following Becker were teammates junior Jack Consenstein in 10th and senior captain Nick Gardner in 11th (only 0.7 seconds away from each other). Very big congratulations to the mens team on this huge leap in the rankings!
Head coach Jason Lemieux comments he is "really proud of both the men's and women's teams today finishing 2nd and 4th. The conditions were really wet and soft and both teams rose to the occasion and skied really well. I was especially psyched to see Jack in the top 10 for the first time! We're building into the season and I'm excited to see what the next few weeks have in store."
The WILLIAMS NORDIC team looks forward to tomorrow when they will compete in a 3 person x 5k relay at Oak Hill.
