RUMFORD, ME—Welcome to snowy Maine and the first day of the Bates Carnival! The Williams Nordic team welcomed the intense hail and mild dampness with open arms, knowing they would be able to display thier toughness.
The women began the day with a mass start 15k classic race. After completing three laps and crossing the finish line, senior captain Ingrid Thyr led the women finishing in an astounding 23rd place. Close behind Thyr was teammate freshman Lilly Bates in 34th place and Siri Bohacek in 37th place.
The women ended their day in 8th position as a women's team, only 13 points out of 7th.
After then women had all finished, the men set out on their 20k mass start classic race. With the women lining the steepest hills cheering their hearts out, the men raced faster than ever and the team had many season bests.
Junior Henry Mcgrew led the men's team with a 10th place finish! Closely following Mcgrew were teammates senior captain Jack Consenstein in 15th and sophomore Isaac Freitas-Eagan only 2 seconds behind in 16th. The men ended up having five men in the top 30 and 6 men in the top 31.
The men ended their day in 5th position as a men's team, only 8 points out of 4th position.
Head coach Jason Lemieux was very proud of his team. He commented, "The team crushed it out there today. The freezing rain and sleet/snow made for some very technical and challenging skiing, but the team put their heads down and fought really hard. Having 6 men in the top 31 and 4 in the top 20 was a big jump up and a highlight of the day. Many personal and season best results made it a great day."
The Williams Nordic team looks forward to tomorrow where the women will compete in a 5k and the men will compete in a 10k individual start skate race. Rock the Cow!
