Sunday River, ME – Snow and sleet prevailed in Sunday River, ME today for day one of the Bates Carnival. The Alpine Ephs battled down the race trail as snow accumulated throughout the day.
Despite challenging weather, Williams skiers posted the best team results of the season and junior Maddie Dekko came away victorious, with a win in the women's slalom. The win was Dekko's first Carnival victory. Dekko led 6 Eph skiers into the top 60 with junior Anna Bruce placing 26th, sophomore Nadine Levey placing 37th, freshman Claudia Cantin placing 40th, sophomore Hannah Trudeau placing 41st, and freshman Isabel Grondin placing 45th.
The men's team saw 3 skiers in the top 30 with senior Will Kannegieser moving up 17 spots between the first and second runs to finish 12th. Senior Ryan Schmidt finished close behind in 15th, and senior Paul Sheils placed 21st. Junior Will Snyder finished in 34thand freshman Zach Dekko finished 38th. "It was incredible to see Maddie Dekko win today and it says a lot about our training program and the team as a whole" senior captain Paul Sheils said. "It was a strong day for the team in all regards with 3 men in the top 30, 2 women in the top 30, 5 men in the top 60, and 6 women in the top 60. Today was probably the strongest team day that I have seen in my Williams career. Beyond results I am really proud of the team mentality people bring to the hill."
The women's team finished 5th in the 13 team field today and the men finished 6th. Combined Nordic and alpine ski results have the Ephs sitting in 5th place after day one. The Ephs return to Sunday River tomorrow for the giant slalom portion of the Bates Carnival.
