Middlebury – VT, The Williams Alpine Ski Team raced day one of the NCAA East Regional Championship/Middlebury Carnival today at the Middlebury College Snowbowl. The Ephs skied slalom on the Ross trail which featured a long flat section that rolls over onto a challenging pitch where the trail turns and has a fall away. Cold temps overnight created consistent snow conditions, while the weather stayed partly cloudy and cold for most of the day.

For the women's team, juniors Maddie Dekko and Anna Bruce were the lone finishers today.  Both skiers showed consistent slalom skiing as they made their way down the tricky terrain. Dekko finished 7th and Bruce finished 13th.

The senior men showed strong finishes in the final slalom race that most of them will have in their collegiate careers. Paul Sheils finished 20th, Ryan Schmidt finished 25th, Cole Janco finished 46th, and after a 15th place first run Will Kannegieser unfortunately had a mistake on the second to ultimately finish 47th. Junior Will Snyder showed great slalom skiing with a 36th place finish. "The Middlebury slalom is always a horse race, a sprint in every sense of the word, and today the team gave it 110%. I was especially impressed with our seniors who showed how to put it all on the line in the final carnival slalom" Assistant Coach Charlie Harrison said. "Even though we did experience some hikes on run 2, it was clear to me that nobody backed down. I was very proud to be leading the Ephs today."

The Women's team finished 6th in the 13-team field today and the men finished 7th, combined with the Nordic ski team scores the Williams Ski Team sits in 5th after day one at Middlebury.

The Williams Alpine Ski Team will return to the Middlebury College Snowbowl for the giant slalom portion of the weekend tomorrow.
