Middlebury, VT – The Ephs raced their final EISA race of the 2020 Carnival season today at the NCAA East Regional Championship/Middlebury Carnival. Skiers raced giant slalom on the Ross trail at the Middlebury Snowbowl. The course began with a really flat top section and skiers had to skate as hard as they could from the built start ramp past the first 6 gates. The course then rolled over to the first short pitch before rolling over two more knolls to reach the final flat where racers had to grab their tuck until the last final steep into the finish, creating a unique and challenging hill.
For the men's team seniors Pauls Sheils and Cole Janco had excellent results in their last career Carnival race, placing 12th and 25th respectively. The third scorer for the men's team was freshman Zach Dekko, placing 46th.
"The Middlebury Carnival was the finale to one of the better seasons that we have had as a team in recent memory. Each week the team got progressively better and I was very proud of the constant improvement that athletes made throughout the season, exemplified especially by Claudia Cantin and our four senior men this weekend, who will be very hard to replace next season" Assistant Coach Jeremy Lawless said. "Our two strongest skiers on the women's team, Maddie Dekko and Anna Bruce, will be returning next year and I am looking forward to watching them ski in their senior seasons."
After two slalom victories on the Carnival circuit this season Maddie Dekko was named to the First Team All East.
The men's team finished 6th today and the women's team finished 9th. Combined with the Nordic Ski Team results, the Williams Ski Team finished 5th overall in the 13-team field for the weekend at Middlebury.
The NCAA Championship team will be announced later this week by the NCAA. The Championships will be hosted by the Montana State University on March 11-14.
