Williamstown, MA -- The first day of the NCAA Skiing Championships kicked off today in Montana at the Bridger Bowl Ski Area. Williams junior Maddie Dekko qualified for the championship after winning two slalom races this season in the Eastern Collegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival circuit at Bates and at home at Williams. After her stellar performance on the carnival circuit she was named to the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association First Team.
It was a beautiful but windy day in Montana. The slope began with 6 gates of steep pitch and then moderate pitch for the rest of the course, finishing with an abrupt 90-degree trail turn. The course set was straightforward with some mixed distances and a difficult exit to a delay on the top pitch. The snow created a bumpy track, challenging a lot of top skiers. Due to extreme wind before Dekko's first run the chair lift had to shut down after about 10 athletes had finished the course and Dekko had to wait at the bottom of the mountain for the chair lift to start again, causing her to miss her start. A handful of other athletes had to miss their starts as well and ended up running at the end of the field. Big wind gusts impacted many skiers as they navigated the trail on their first runs.
Even after a change in start position, Dekko showed strong skiing to finish in 21st place overall.
"Maddie attacked the course, even though she had a costly mistake at the top of the hill, she continued to look for speed and charge all the way down" Assistant Coach Chuck Harrison said. "She dealt with the wind and the chair lift curve balls very well."
Dekko will compete in the slalom race of the NCAA Championship at the Bridger Bowl on Friday 3/11.
