WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—With time winding down on the shot clock late in the fourth quarter, freshman Lexi Jones nailed a three from the left wing to extend the Williams College Ephs (1-0) lead to 64-47 over the Wheaton College Lyons (2-1). She was one of 10 women on the team to score on the day for Williams, whose balanced offensive attack proved too much for the Lyons. Williams would go on to win 68-53.
Deadlocked at 13 at the end of the first quarter, Wheaton opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to go up 20-13. However, the Lyons could not build on their momentum and only took a 28-27 lead into halftime.
"We were very tentative in the first half. Our players were overthinking things instead of just reacting and playing. We complicated things and we just needed to simplify," said Williams Head Coach Pat Manning.
The Ephs got off to a fast start in the third quarter. Junior guard Devon Caveney tied the game at 30 with a three-pointer early in the third quarter. Senior forward Katie Litman then gave Williams their first lead since 13-10 on a fast break layup. Good outside shooting helped Williams build a 49-42 lead after three quarters. The Ephs' momentum carried over into the fourth quarter as they continued to extend their lead and put the game out of reach for the Lyons.
"We have a lot of depth, a lot of versatility and we didn't get in foul trouble. I thought today Katie Litman really stood out to me. I thought she did a great job on the boards and just overall scoring in the paint. She had a really strong post presence and that allowed some of our perimeter players to come in and score," said Manning.
Litman led Williams with 16 points while Caveney added 12. Senior forward Oge Uwanaka pulled down 11 rebounds.
Senior forward Kiley Shoemaker led the Lyons with 18 points.
Williams will play Babson tomorrow at 3:00 P.M.
