National Honors for Eph Women’s Crew from CRCA: 3 All-America Nominees & 19 Scholar Athlete Honorees

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – Kate Maloney's 2019-20 Williams College women's crew team was only able to compete in the fall portion of their schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that did not stop 20 team members from achieving national acclaim from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA).

2020 Pocock All-America Nominees

The absence of competitive results or a national championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic preclude awarding 1st and 2nd Team All-America Awards for the 2020 season.  However, the coaches of the CRCA still wanted to find a way to recognize the top performers in NCAA women's rowing.

For 2020, Division I and II coaches were allowed to nominate up to four student athletes and one coxswain, and Division III coaches up to two rowers and one coxswain.

The three All-America honorees representing the 2020 Ephs are Georgia Ganser a sophomore from New York, N.Y., junior Samantha Lazer from Orchard Park, N.Y., and sophomore Liz Ostermeyer from Berkeley, Calif. "While Georgia, Sam, and Liz didn't have an opportunity to show their prowess on the water this spring, their consistently high level of effort through the fall and winter was an inspiration to their teammates," noted Maloney. "All three athletes pushed themselves to new levels of personal achievement and were great examples of steadfast hard work. It was unfortunate that they weren't able to compete this spring, but I am excited that all three return for future spring seasons!"

Scholar Athlete Awards

The CRCA 2020 Scholar Athlete Award requirements have been modified for the 2020 season.  Student athletes must be in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of eligibility, must be ranked performance-wise in the top 50% of their team, or in the "NCAA Squad" (whichever is smaller) at the conclusion of the 2020 season*, and must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher for their career, and through the fall semester or quarter for the current competition year.

*Formerly: Race in an NCAA boat for 75% of the season or at the conference championships

Williams women's crew led all NCAA Division III institutions with 19 athletes named CRCA Scholar Athletes this year.

"Our student athletes work hard to find a balance between the demands of academics and athletics," stated Maloney. "In having 19 student athletes who meet the CRCA criteria, it shows that Williams Women's Crew has found a good formula for success in both areas. I am proud that our team puts forth the effort that results in a high level of performance in both."
