Williams Blanks Sacred Heart 4-0

BRIDGEPORT, CT – After falling in overtime to Castleton last week, the Williams Women's hockey team (3-4-0) rebounded in a big way with a resounding 4-0 victory over the Sacred Heart Pioneers (1-6-3). Williams got four goals from four different Ephs and 18 saves from Margaret Draper (Belmont, MA) in solidifying tonight's road victory.

It took the Ephs until 18:06 in the first period to get on the board, after testing Sacred Heart netminder Alexius Schutt multiple times to open the contest.  They refused to look back, tacking on three goals in an explosive second stanza to open up a commanding four-goal advantage. They would hold onto their hard earned lead throughout the final minutes of regulation.

"We scored first, and continued to play a full 60 minutes, in which we killed off some penalties and had goals from four different people, which was great," commented Head coach Meghan Gillis.

Sophomore forward Michaela Levine (Lititz, PA) started off the scoring for the Ephs.

Her 3rd tally of the season came off a rebound from a shot at the point from teammate Caitlin Conlon (Sudbury, MA). Senior captain Cristina Bravi (Montreal, QC) also picked up an assist.

The Levine goal held up and Williams took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. In the opening session Williams outshot Sacred Heart 15-3.

Sophomore forward Natalie Bernstein (Kenilworth, IL) got the ball rolling for Williams in their dominant second period when she notched the Ephs second goal of the evening at 11:50. On a 2-on-1, she got a shot off that found its way past Schutt. The freshman tandem of Hanna Beattie (Whitehouse Station, NJ) and Emily Krueger (Manasquan, NJ) provided the assists.

The Ephs would extend the gap even more thanks to a goal from Krueger coming 16:21 in. She made a move at the blue line and sent it low past Schutt to up the Eph lead to 3-0. Bravi earned her second assist of the night on the play.

Feeding off the momentum created by the Krueger goal, junior forward Andree Heller (Toronto, ON) registered a goal just nine seconds later, when she came across the blue line, cut in and shot it blocker side to score. Bernstein and Beattie were each awarded assists on the play.

With Draper turning aside all six shots that came from the Pioneers, the Ephs owned a 4-0 lead after two periods. They also owned a hefty shot tally of 31, to Sacred Heart's nine.

While the final stanza remained scoreless, the Ephs still kept the pressure on and outshot their opponents 13-9. Both goalies tightened up to keep the last 20-minutes scoreless, finalizing the score at 4-0. Draper turned away nine attempts, to complete the night with a total of 18 saves and her first shut out.

Schutt made 27 saves in the first 40 minutes of play, and teammate Amanda Fontaine turned away 13 bids in the final 20 minutes.

The Ephs successfully killed off the three penalties they committed, including a second period situation that saw them down two-men for a time.

Gillis noted Draper's strong performance, "Draper made a lot of really nice saves to secure her shutout," and looks forward to building off tonight's victory headed into tomorrow, "We want to keep building on all of the things we did right today. We played really well in the offensive and neutral zone and we want to keep building on and improving in our defensive zone."

The Ephs take the ice again tomorrow against Saint Anselm at Lansing Chapman Rink at 4pm.
