ADRIAN, MICH – The Williams College Ephs were unable to maintain their 1-0 lead from the first period when the Adrian College Bulldogs came back in the third with three goals, with the game-winner coming at 9:47 by Sarah Shureb'17 (Livonia, MICH). The Ephs are now (3-4-0) and the Bulldogs are (7-0-1).
The Ephs and Bulldogs were neck and neck in the first period as both goalies were tested early on. In net for Williams, Margaret Draper '17 (Belmont, MA) came out with a big presence, stopping a breakaway 6:50 minutes into the game.
Though the Bulldogs outshot Williams 14 to 10, the Ephs were relentless and took the lead at 12:41. Michaela Levine'16 (Lititz, PA) tipped in the puck after the Bulldogs were unable to clear the puck off of a Williams shot by Gwen Schultz'15 (Wallingford, CT).
The Ephs were energized by their goal and picked up the pace for the remainder of the first period, playing fast and clean hockey. At 18:06, Williams had their first power play but could not get past Adrian's defensive line.
However the Ephs were unfazed by Adrian's penalty kill and continued playing strong offense and defense in the second stanza.
Head coach Meghan Gillis commented, "We did a great job short handed in the second period," as the Ephs kept their one-goal lead throughout the second. Draper stopped Adrian's second breakaway of the night at 5:50 with a fantastic splits save. Even though the Bulldogs had two power plays – at 7:03 and 16:47 - the Ephs gave the Bulldogs few scoring chances and played excellent defense.
Adrian's defense stayed tough as well. Led by Jade Walsh'17 (Cochrane, ALB) in net, the Bulldogs had two penalty kills, one at 11:46 and then at 18:52.
The Bulldogs tied the game early in the third when Devyn Fitzhenry'16 (Gaylord, MICH) forced a turnover behind the Williams net and scored unassisted at 1:59. This goal sparked the Bulldogs as they would take the lead at 8:43 with another goal by Fitzhenry on an assist by Logan Taylor'16 (Grosse Ile, MICH). Adrian secured their lead at 9:47 when Sarah Shureb deflected a shot from Courtney Millar'15 (Newport, MICH) to advance the score to 3-1.
The Ephs pulled their goalie with 3 minutes to go and had a few chances, but were unable to capitalize.
