Middletown, Connecticut- The Williams Ephs (4-2-0, 3-1-0 NESCAC) overtook the Wesleyan Cardinals (1-4-0, 0-2-0 NESCAC) 3-0. The two teams faced off for their second matchup this weekend. Cardinal senior goaltender Laura Corcoran took senior Corinne Rivard's starting position in between the pipes and the Ephs kept sophomore Christina Cleroux in net.
The first period saw no goals but both teams had good chances, both testing the other team's defense lines and netminder. The period played more evenly than yesterday's with equal time in both zones.
The Cardinals came off the first break with a lot of energy but the Williams defenders and sophomore goaltender Christina Cleroux were able to ward off the Cardinal opportunities. After both teams struggled to finish off any shots, Williams finally broke through with a goal at 9:53 of the second period. Senior Talia Simon assisted sophomore Kearan Burke with a shot from the point that Burke tipped in. The second period ended with Williams leading by one, 1-0.
The Ephs started the third period strong with an early goal at 3:38 by senior Michaela Levine. Levine skated through the neutral zone and into the Cardinals' offensive zone; she beat out her defensemen and shot it past Wesleyan goaltender Laura Corcoran.
Levine made it a three-goal game with her second goal of the game at 11:23 of the third. The Ephs were on a two-on-one and Levine finished it off with a shot over the right shoulder of Laura Corcoran.
"I thought that the line of Michaela Levine, Annie Rush, and Sarah Lehman continued to build off of what they did yesterday," head coach Meghan Gillis said. "They had a hand in two of the three goals today, two of the three yesterday."
The game finished at 3-0, giving Eph netminder sophomore Christina Cleroux her second shutout of the season, only letting in five goals in five games.
"Cleroux played amazing; she helped us stay in the game when Wesleyan had three power plays in the first period and gave us a chance to win," Gillis said.
The Ephs will return to ice at 3pm, December 12. They will play Utica in the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
