Ephs beat Castleton 6-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — The Williams College women's hockey team (4-3-0) downed out-of-conference opponent Castleton University (3-6-0) 6-0 tonight. Sophomore Olivia Stokes scored the game winning goal at 17:32 in the first period. The Ephs will face off against Manhattanville — another out-of-conference opponent — this Saturday at Lansing Chapman Rink.

The Ephs started out the first period with a commanding presence, maintaining possession of the puck and outshooting the Spartans 12 to 6.

Castleton went on the power play early on in the first frame. The Spartans' offensive line tested freshman goalie Marissa Anderson (East Falmouth, MA) with a shot from the point that she stopped in her bread basket. Also, sophomore Kearan Burke (Shrewsbury, MA) blocked a hard slap shot from the top of the circle, and sent the puck into the Castleton end to give the Ephs their first penalty kill of the game.

Williams went on the power play at 12:03, but were unable to convert a goal. However going on the power play again at 16:11, Stokes scored at 17:32 to give the Ephs a 1-0 advantage over the Spartans.

In the Castleton end, junior Alex Lovaas (Wayzata, MN) passed the puck to sophomore Eliza Quigley (Marblehead, MA). Quigley laid it over to Stokes, who backhanded the puck into the net, beating freshman goalie Alexis Kalm (Aberdeen, NC) with a shot above her blocker.

Starting the second frame up 1-0, the Ephs solidified their lead with a goal at 2:09. Burke won the puck off the forecheck, and took a shot that sophomore Annie Rush (Anchorage, AK) buried in the net to make it 2-0.

Continuing to put offensive pressure on the Spartans, the Ephs scored a minute and twenty seconds later to go up 3-0. Junior Candy Lu (Studio City, CA) passed the puck to Stokes in the neutral zone, who carried the puck around the net to then take a wrap around shot. Senior assistant captain Emily Krueger (Manasquan, NJ) scored off Stokes' rebound.

At 9:26, the Ephs went up 4-0 against Castleton, with a goal by senior assistant captain Caitlin Buckley (Mahopac, NY). Junior Emily Eide (Edina, MN) went on the forecheck, to win the puck below the Castleton goal line. She passed the puck to Buckley, who was waiting in the slot to one time it into the net.

Williams continued to control the puck in the second half of the period, going into the third period outshooting the Spartans 25 to 4.

Castleton came out playing good defense in the final frame, earning a penalty kill at 3:35.

Playing aggressive hockey, the Ephs received a penalty at 8:46, giving the Spartans a one man advantage. However, Williams defense managed to ice the puck twice, leading their team to their second penalty kill of the night.

Senior Sara Lehman scored fifty seconds into a power play at 14:09, making it 5-0 for Williams. Sophomore Abby Brustad (Mound, MN) passed the puck over to Eide. She laid it over to Lehman, who was positioned just outside the Castleton crease, ready to one time the puck into the net for the goal.

On fire in the third period, Lehman earned her second goal of the night at 17:26. Freshman Mia Carroll (New Canaan, CT) took a shot from the point, that Lehman tipped in off the rebound.

Williams killed a penalty starting at 17:50, and another one starting at 19:44 to give Anderson her first collegiate shut-out.

Ephs head coach Meghan Gillis commented on the impressive 6-0 win, stating "Our team played great offensively, and skated hard for a fully sixty minutes of play. In order to prepare to face another strong opponent this Saturday, we will continue to focus on playing more confidently in the defensive zone. We want to finish off 2016 well."

Anderson made a total of 17 saves, while Kalm stopped 51 shots.

Williams faces off against out-of-conference opponent Manhattanville this Saturday at 7pm.
