Brunswick, ME-- The Williams College Ephs played the Bowdoin Polar Bears for the second game of the weekend today at 3pm at Sydney J. Watson Rink at Bowdoin College. After a game full of penalties for both sides, Williams special teams and first year goalie Chloe Heiting were able to keep the Polar Bears from scoring a single goal while a strong performance from offensive forwards gave Williams a 3-0 win over Bowdoin.

Williams started the game on the offensive right away when a backhand rebound from sophomore Avery Dunn was knocked in by junior Amanda Reisman at 3:17. At 6:11, Williams senior Abby Brustad was given a hooking penalty, giving the Polar Bears the first power play opportunity of the game. Bowdoin took some shots during this power play but were unable to get the puck past first year goalie Chloe Heiting and the Williams special teams.

At 13:49 into the first period, Williams scored again when sophomore Michaela O'Connor, assisted by Reisman, brought about a two on one and were able to put the puck past Bowdoin goalie Kerri St. Dennis.

Williams was given a power play opportunity soon after when Bowdoin's Cassidy Pratt was called for hooking at 14:24. Although the Ephs took some good shots during this power play, they were unable to find the net for the remainder of the period. The period finished off with some more quality saves from Heiting, maintaining the 2-0 lead for Williams.

The second period started with a penalty to Bowdoin's Izzi Stoddard at 1:20 for checking. Williams was unable to convert on this power play opportunity but were given another power play opportunity almost immediately after the first penally ended when Bowdoin's Ali Dougal was called for hooking and Katie Leininger was called for slashing, both at 3:22 into the second period. The Ephs took shot after shot during this five on three power play but were unable to get the puck past St. Dennis.

At 7:53 into the second period, Williams senior Abby Brustad was called for holding, which Heiting and the team were able to successfully kill off. Williams was given another power play opportunity at 12:41 when Bowdoin's Marissa Fichter was called for hooking. Williams made its first power play goal during this opportunity as Abby Brustad, assisted by sophomores Brynn Puppe and Meghan Halloran, scored a goal at 14:19.

The Ephs had to kill off another penalty at 15:43 when Williams sophomore Georgia Keogh received a hooking penalty and again at 18:25 when Brynn Puppe was also called for hooking. Although the Polar Bears took multiple shots on the Ephs net, Heiting was able to hold on to the 3-0 lead for Williams for the remainder of the second period. Julia Surgenor from Bowdoin received the seventh penalty of the period at 19:42 when she was called for cross-checking, giving Williams a power play opportunity going into the third period after 25 seconds of four on four play.

In the third period, Williams' Avery Dunn was called for hooking at 3:02 and 11:14 but the Ephs were able to kill off both penalties. Both teams went back and forth throughout the third period but the score remained 3-0, bringing Williams another victory.

"It was a big weekend to get two wins versus Bowdoin" said Eph head coach Meghan Gillis, "Chloe Heiting made two saves in the first that would have made the score 2-2 instead of 2-0 for us heading into the second period." By the end of the game, Heiting had posted an impressive shutout performance, saving all of Bowdoin's 36 shots, while Bowdoin's St. Dennis saved 37 of  40 Williams shots.

"There are definitely parts of our game that we will be focusing on improving this week at practice," Gillis said. A hihglight this afternoon for the Ephs was "The penalty kill blocked a lot of shots and made some really good rotations today keeping Bowdoin 0 for 6," Gillis added.

The Ephs play their next game next Friday at home against Colby Colby College at Lansing Chapman Rink.
