Ephs Toppled by Panthers 3-1

MIDDLEBURY, VT -- The Williams College Ephs ((11-8-4, 8-6-2 NESCAC) faced the Middlebury Panthers (17-2-3, 12-1-1 NESCAC) this afternoon at Middlebury. Despite scoring early in the game and fighting hard through the rest of the periods, the Ephs were unable to hold off the Panthers, allowing them a 3-1 victory.

Williams was able to score right in the beginning of the first period when first year Kelly McCarthy was able to score  at 5:58 after getting the puck from sophomore CC Wallin and sophomore Elizabeth Welch. The Ephs then had a few penalties in this period, and the Panthers were able to capitalize on one of these power play opportunities at the very end of the first at 19:52.

Then the Panthers started to pull ahead in the second period with a goal right in the beginning of the period at 1:52. Despite a power play opportunity in this period, the Ephs were unable to find the net and fell even further behind when Middlebury scored again at 17:27.

The third period brought some strong play from both sides but neither team was able to score, despite some power play chances on both sides. By the end of the game, sophomore Chloe Heiting had saved 25 of 28 Minddlebury shots while the Panthers saved 22 of 23 Williams shots.

"I thought our team played one of our better games of the season despite the final score. We came out the way we wanted to in the first. Middlebury capitalized on a few defensive breakdowns, " said head coach Meghan Gillis, "I am proud of what the team did today after a long and mentally tough week."

The Ephs play Middlebury again tomorrow afternoon.
