Williams College Athletic Director Lisa Melendy announced on July 8 that Carolyn Miles, Associate Director for Student-Athlete Services, has been named the Interim Head Women’s Crew Coach for the 2021-22 season.
“I am grateful for Carolyn’s willingness to take the helm while Head Coach Kate Maloney is taking a sabbatical leave,” stated Melendy.
Miles has a wealth of rowing experience, having competed at NCAA Division I University of New Hampshire (UNH). Upon graduation, she remained at UNH as the Novice Crew Coach before becoming the Varsity Head Coach in the spring of 1999.
In 2001 Miles left UNH to become an Athletic Administrator and Head Crew Coach at Sarah Lawrence College.
In the fall of 2019 Miles served as the Assistant Women’s Crew Coach at Williams when Coach Maloney was on maternity leave and again stepped in to assist in the fall of 2020 when the program was again in need of an assistant.
In addition, Miles has served on the NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championship Committee for the last five years, the past two as Chair, and as a member of the NCAA DI, DII, and DIII Fairness Committee.
“I am very excited and honored to have the opportunity to work with this team of talented student-athletes,” said Miles. “I have observed the dedication, hard work, and passion this team has shown over the years. I too share the passion for this sport and I am looking forward to putting in the time and hard work it requires to assist this team to work to their potential.
“The success of this program speaks for itself, and I will work to ensure Williams women's crew continues to be a program that excels at the highest level. I am confident in the team's ability to perform at such a high level and can't wait to embark on this journey with each and every one of them.”
Miles will soon be finalizing the hiring of the next assistant coach along with Head Men’s Crew Coach Marc Mandel.
“I am confident the program is in good hands and am glad we have such a capable person prepared, willing, and excited to serve in this role,” said Melendy.
