GET TO KNOW MIAÂ ROETS:
Why did you choose Williams College?
Coming from South Africa and then moving to South Carolina, I wanted a completely new experience. Going to a strong academic school mattered to me. Williams stood out and felt like home.
Â
What do you like about Williams women's tennis?
I admire my teammates. We all come from different backgrounds, and we always come together and support each other both on and off the court.
Â
What is your pre-match routine?
I like to keep it simple. The less I think about the match, the better. I enjoy chatting with my teammates and staying relaxed. The team huddle before we play is always a fun part of it for me, it helps me feel grounded and connected.
Â
If you could have one of your teammates' tennis strokes (forehand, backhand, etc.), whose would you take and why?
Returning Margaux’s serve in practice is always my biggest challenge, which is exactly why I would take her serve.
Â
Favorite class taken at Williams?
American Art and Architecture.
Â
What other things do you do on campus?
Outside of classes, I like going on drives and exploring nearby places, especially good food spots. I also enjoy going to football games and spending time with friends.
Â
If you could play another sport at Williams, what would it be and why?
I would probably choose track & field, specifically hurdles. I have done hurdles my whole life and only quit fairly recently to focus more on tennis, but I have always loved the adrenaline and challenge of it.
Â
Which teammate will have the most interesting job in 10 years?
I would say Jane because she is creative, always thinks outside the box and is compassionate, so I know she will end up in an interesting job.
Â
What is a food you could eat every day and never tire of?
Mango. Easily.
Â
Favorite place you have visited or traveled to?
My favorite place I have traveled to has to be South Africa, but I think I might be a little biased since I am from there. A South African safari to be specific.
Â
If you could sit down for lunch with anyone in the world, who would it be?
My parents. We spent a lot of time apart when I moved to the U.S. and they were back home, so I really value any chance I get to make up for that time now.
