Williams Wrestling Downs Wesleyan at Quad Duals Meeting

ITHACA, NY – The Williams College wrestling team traveled to Ithaca College to take part in a quad meet organized there. Besides the Ephs and the hosting Ithaca College Bombers, the Wesleyan University Cardinals and the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons also took part in competition.

With four strong wrestling programs present, all teams had a tough day ahead of them. The first matches began at 11:00 am, followed by another round at 1:00 pm, and finished with the final round at 3:00 pm. Each team got the opportunity to wrestle the other three.

With a record of 1-2 for the day against stiff competition, Eph head coach Scott Honecker was pleased with the team's performance: "This was a great event today. All top teams and everybody is getting close to their best with the qualifier right around the corner. Wesleyan was our only league opponent so we were focused on them out of the gate. All 10 guys contributed to the win as we won big in some places and didn't give up the bonus points in the losses. Sebastian [Dziadkiewicz] is going to be the star of the day winning the deciding match, but none of it happens without Bennett Caplin setting it up. We have been wrestling this kid out of weight class all season long to help the team, and he gives us 100% every time out. Bennett keeping his opponent from getting a tech or a fall made it all possible. We would have preferred to be in a position to send him out to go crazy for the win, but we sent him out there with a job to do and he executed for his brothers. Of course Sebastian came through with the clutch takedown to seal the deal, and it was a blast to watch the guys celebrate the most exciting moment of the season so far."

Williams began their Sunday against Wesleyan University. A prior encounter at the Budd Whitehill Duals earlier in the season ended in the Cardinal's favor. Coming in to today's duals Wesleyan was ranked well ahead of Williams.

Wesleyan went up early at 125 pounds with overtime 5-3 victory to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Ben Morton led the way for the Ephs first points at 133 pounds. His 12-6 decision victory set the tone and evened the score at 3-3.

Sophomore Joey Rossetti extended the lead in the following match with a decisive 4:45 pin to put Williams up six at 9-3. Another Cardinal decision victory at 149 pounds cut the lead down to three at 9-6.

Fellow sophomore Brendan Kiernan pushed the Ephs further ahead with an 8-4 decision victory. His success moved the score to 12-6. A Major Decision victory at 165 pounds gave Wesleyan four more points and moved the match score to 12-10 moving into 174 pounds.

First year Tariq Grissom started a minor streak for Williams with an 11-5 decision victory over his opponent at 174 pounds. Junior Luke Anslemi followed suit with an 11-6 decision victory in his match.  Their success pushed the Ephs to a dominant eight-point lead at 18-10.

A final major decision victory at 197 pounds would be the last points scored by Wesleyan for the match. Senior Sebastian Dziadkiewicz sealed the deal with a final victory in the final heavy weight match to put the Ephs up seven.

The final score of the dual was 21-14 in favor of the Ephs.

With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Williams College wrestling team are fast approaching a difficult postseason. Their next chance to compete will come in five day's time at the home dual meet against Castleton University on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7:00 PM in Lasell Gym..

Coach Honecker summed up today's events: "Ithaca and Oneonta are top caliber teams.  We can come a long way in three weeks.  Every year we use this event to set the table for regionals, helping us determine our final adjustments as we head down the stretch.  Great effort and intensity have been what we have been focused on all year, and we have been delivering.  Now it is time to shift the attention to our execution as our guys take on the last month of season."

The last dual meet of the season will also be the last opportunity for the five 2019 senior wrestlers to compete at home. Come out to Chandler Gymnasium at 7pm on Friday the 8th to cheer on Bennet Caplin, Sebastian Dziadkiewicz, Ben Morton, Alex Pankhurst, and Brendon Seyfried.
