WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College Wrestling team began their 2019-2020 season today with a home dual against the Trinity College Bantams. With a decisive 225-19 victory last season, the Ephs were looking to continue their success this year. The home opener drew a sizeable crowd and the Ephs rose to the challenge posting a 28-18 win to open the 2019-20 season.

Coach Scott Honecker was pleased with his team's first performance. He commented: "The major things from today were getting to weight for the first time and getting some film in combat so we can finally go back to the lab and make our adjustments." He continued: "I was really pleased with the performance up and down the lineup, but particularly the first year's efforts. We will improve on the places we fell short with more experience and continued focus. Win or lose we represented what we believe in as competitors: hard work, good attitude, and no quit."

The 157 weight division began the action for the night. Senior captain Yo Akiyama faced off against Trinity senior Lukas Kaminski. His dominant 15-4 major decision victory set the tone and put the Ephs up 4-0 to start off. Fellow senior Nick Anselmi was bested next by Bantam senior Kevin Lyskawa with an 11-4 decision. The back and forth put the score at 4-3 heading into the third match of the dual.

First year Dante Gutbrod made his Williams College debut at 174 against Trinity senior Stephen Cerrone. A well fought match ended in a 11-4 loss for the Ephs and moved the dual score into Bantam territory at 4-6.

Williams' first year Will Smith also made a splash in his first appearance on the mat at 184. He faced off against Michael Fernandez Ravelo and came out with an impressive early pin. His success launched Williams back into the lead with a score of 10-6. Unfortunately, Eph senior Dylan Millson was pinned in the following match by 197 pounder Evan Frank to once again switch the lead in Trinity's favor.

Heading into William's first year Larry Adyeri's match, the Bantams were up 12-10. Adyeri was bested by Trinity's 285 pounder, John O'Brien, to put the Bantams lead at five. Heading into the 125 and 133 weight divisions, Trinity was up 15-10.

The Bantams were unable to field competitors for either of the following matches. The forfeits put Williams up 22-15. Junior and top ranked 141 pounder, Joey Rossetti, kept the ball rolling with a dominant pin over Finn McGovern to further extend the lead to 28-15.

Sophomore Nicholas Stefanelli made his first start for Williams at 149 to complete the scored portion of the dual. He faced off against Trinity's Finn Mcgovern, but was bested with a score of 7-2. The Bantam victory closed the deficit to ten at 28-18, but was too little too late to prevent a Williams Wrestling victory.

With their first win under their belt, Williams wrestling will look to find further success at their first tournament of the year. The annual Doug Parker Invitational will take place on a little over a week on November 23rd. The Ephs will travel to Springfield College for an all-day event beginning at 10:00 am.
