Ephs Go 2-0 Against Plymouth and Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER STATE, MA – The Williams College Wrestling Team traveled to Bridgewater State University today to take part in another series of duals being held there. Similar to the triduals setup from the prior week, the Ephs had the opportunity to compete against both Bridgewater State and Plymouth State Wrestling.

A mixed 1-1 record against Hunter College and Western New England University last weekend had the Ephs eager to return to their winning ways.  Bridgewater state entered the competition with a mixed record of their own after earning a 2-2 record at the NEWA duals in mid-January. At the same tournament, Plymouth State came out with an 0-4 record.

The Saturday match featured strong wrestling from all sides. After competing round robin against one another, the Ephs completed a strong day with a 2-0 record. Head Coach Scott Honecker was pleased with his team's performance and had this to say: "We performed really well today.  I am so proud of the grit this team has.  With our small numbers we are always facing adversity, sometimes asking our guys to compete in imperfect conditions.  We persevered to win both duals.  Everyone had to contribute to beat Bridgewater.  The matches split 5-5 so getting bonus points in the wins and limiting bonus points in the losses was the deciding factor.  Both of those are just a demonstration of heart.  Excited to roll this lineup again in our last home event next Saturday.".

For their first match of the day, the Ephs took on Plymouth State University. Action kicked off at 2:00 pm with matches at all major weight classes. An initial back and forth ultimately ended firmly in the Ephs favor with a score of 31-15.

Sophomore 125 stand out David Yeh gave the Ephs a quick six points to start the match when Plymouth State was unable to field a competitor. The Panthers dug into that lead in the following match as their 133 pounder won an 8-2 decision victory to make the dual score 6-3.

Junior Captain Joey Rossetti continued a dominant streak with a quick 1:49 pin to add another six team points. First year Albert Xing followed his teammates performance with 13-1 major decision victory at 149 pounds to put the Ephs further into the lead at 16-3.

The Panthers got another six points by default at 157 pounds. However, junior Brendan Kiernan put the Ephs back into a strong position at 165 pounds with a 6-2 decision victory. Entering 174 pounds, the Ephs were up 19-9.

Plymouth state was unable to field representatives at either 174 or 184 pounds. The forfeits gave the Ephs their final twelve points of the match and clinched the victory. While the Panthers completed the dual on a strong note with two decision victories, the final score ended at 31-15 for Williams Wrestling.

As one of the visiting teams, the Ephs were locked into the two late slots for the day. Their victory in the first match was followed by a match up against the hosts, Bridgewater State University. The Ephs took a decisive lead to start the match, but the Bridgewater Bears clawed their way back to a close one point loss.

The Ephs strategically started in the middle of their lineup where the team has been particularly consistent throughout the season. Rossetti led this effort for Williams Wrestling at 141. His 4:47 pin gave the Ephs a 6-0 lead moving into Xing's 149 pound match up. Xing continued a strong recent string of victories with a pin of his own, in 2:45, which extended the Ephs lead to twelve early on.

Senior Captain Yo Akiyama rounded out the trio at 157, by delivering a key 7-2 decision victory over Devin Winn to make the match score 15-0. The Bears fired back at 165 with a narrow 6-5 victory that put them on the board and cut the deficit to twelve at 15-3.

Kiernan gave the Ephs their fifteen-point lead back in the 174 pound match when he defeated Dave MacNeil 4-3. Despite their dominance through the first stretch, Bridgewater State came in strong through the back half of the dual. The Bears managed to record victories at 184, 197, and 285 all in a row. A combination of a tech fall, a major decision, and a decision victory cut significantly into Williams Wrestling's lead. Entering the 125 weight division, the Ephs were up just three team points at 18-15.

Yeh, came up big for the Ephs to give them their final points of the dual with a 15-5 major decision victory. His success ensured that when the Bears recorded a pin at 133 pounds, they were unable to take the lead. The final score ended a point in the Ephs favor at 22-21.

With another tri-dual under their belt, the Ephs have moved another week closer to their ultimate goal of a strong performance at Northeast Regionals which will take place later in February on the 29th. Before that tournament Williams Wrestling has a few more chances to compete against strong competition. One of these opportunities doubles as the Ephs final home competition and will serve as their annual senior night.

Next week on February 8th, the Ephs get their chance to host their sole quad dual of the season. Ithaca, Oneonta, and fellow NESCAC member, Wesleyan, will make the trek to Williamstown to compete in a series of three matches. That competition will kick off on the morning of the 8th and run the entirety of the day.
