Ephs Defeat Wesleyan 21-15 on Senior Night

Ephs Defeat Wesleyan 21-15 on Senior Night

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College wrestling team hosted their final home event of the season today. Initially scheduled as a quad dual, inclement weather pushed the start time back two hours to 2:00 pm and prevented Oneonta State from being able to compete. As a result, Ithaca College, Wesleyan University, and the Ephs went head to head in a series of duals over the course of the afternoon.

In addition to being the final home event of the season, today's duals doubled as the Ephs senior day. Yo Akiyama, Luke Anselmi, Nick Anslemi, Dietrich Hartman, and Dylan Millson have devoted countless hours over their four seasons of consistent commitment to the Williams wrestling program. Their contributions on and off the mat have paved the way for the Ephs strong season thus far and they will undoubtedly leave large shoes to fill for the current juniors moving forward.

In the typical tri-dual setup, the Ephs had the opportunity to compete against both the Ithaca Bombers and the Wesleyan Cardinals over the course of the day. After a special senior ceremony with the friends and family of the five honored, the Ephs took on the Bombers at 2:00 pm. The schedule ensured they had a long break in the middle where Wesleyan and Ithaca faced off, and Williams wrestling went on to finish the day out with the dual against the Cardinals at 5:00 pm. Strong competition from all sides ensured the Ephs completed the day with a 1-1 record.

Eph head Coach Scott Honecker was proud of his team's performance today: "It was great to bring a top program [Ithaca] in here and get some really important matches against a historic program. Obviously, the featured bout of the date was going to be against Wesleyan and honestly, I didn't think we did what we needed to do to win the dual. I am going to give these guys a reality check after they enjoy their win tonight. We lost too many close matches and we need to turn that corner in advance of the regional tournament three weeks from today."

The Ithaca dual began at 125 pounds where sophomore David Yeh took on Logan Ninos. A well-matched back and forth was decided by Yeh's takedown which gave him a 5-3 decision victory to put Williams up 3-0 to start. A Bomber pin at 133 pounds erased the Eph lead and opened up a lead for Ithaca at 6-3.

Junior captain Joey Rossetti remained reliable at 141 pounds with a grinding 2-0 decision victory over Tito Colom. The decision victory cut Ithaca's leadand tied the match score at 6-6. Unfortunately, this would be the last win that Williams wrestling would record against the Bombers. Victories at 149 through 285 pounds included a few forfeits and pins which gave Ithaca the victory at 41-6.

For their second match of the day, the Ephs took on the Wesleyan Cardinals at 5:00 pm. The Cardinals were fresh off a tough loss to Ithaca in the match prior. A relentlessly back and forth match between the Cardinals and the Ephs ended in a strong anchoring effort for the Ephs to take a 21-15 victory

The Cardinals started the dual strong with victories at both 125 and 133 pounds. The 125-pound match proved to be an exciting head to head when a 4-4 tie at the end of three periods of regulation forced an OT period. That close decision victory was followed by a Wesleyan major decision victory at 133 pounds which combined to put the Cardinals up 6-0 moving into the 141-pound match.

At 141 pounds, Rossetti continued his undefeated streak with a dominant 2:36 pin over Andrew Hennessy. The match put the Ephs on the board and tied the score at 6-6. At 149 pounds, Wesleyan returned with a 5-3 decision victory to put them back in the lead at 9-6.

Akiyama stepped in at 157 for a grueling battle which went to OT after three periods of wrestling ended in a 5-5 tie. The second OT match of the dual ended definitely in the Ephs favor after Akiyama scored a key two-point takedown to take a 7-5 victory and tie the match score once more at 9-9. At 165 pounds, junior Brendan Kiernan gave the Ephs their first lead of the day with an 11-2 major decision victory which opened a three-point gap to make the score 12-9.

Wesleyan fired back at 165 pounds with a decision victory which evened the dual once again at 12-12.  The 184 pound match extended the Cardinals lead when a late turn around gave Wesleyan the victory and put them back in control of the dual at 15-12.

First year Larry Adyeri recorded a huge pin at 197 pounds which swung the lead yet again in the Ephs direction. The six points put Williams Wrestling up 18-15 moving into the Heavyweight match. The outcome of the final match would determine the eventual outcome. With the Ephs up only three, the Cardinals needed only decision victory to tie. The Ephs could put it away with a victory of their own. Senior Dylan MIllson, who had been stepping up to the challenge all season faced off against a much larger opponent. His eventual 4-3 decision victory clinched the victory and sealed the final home event on a very strong note. The back and for the battle ended with a score of 21-15 in favor of Williams.

Before wrapping up, coach Honecker took the time to praise a few of his wrestler's particularly strong efforts today: "In spite of all, Larry really set the table for the win at 197 pounds. We had foreseen the heavyweight bout having major implications and coach Foote and Dylan had a plan and they executed it to get the victory. I was also glad to see Yo and Dylan close out their home careers with victories. Our win over Wesleyan also marked a sweep of the NESCAC programs this year.".

With February wrestling in full swing, the Ephs are moving into the final stretch of the 2019-2020 season. Williams wrestling has three more weekends of assured wrestling. Further competition will be based on how the team performs at NCAA Northeast Regionals on February 29th. Strong competition and training week in and out have set the Ephs up for a solid finish. The team's next chance to compete will come on February 14th when Williams travels up the road to Vermont to take on Castleton University. That action will kick off at 7:00 pm.
