WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — The Williams College women's soccer will be making its 17th appearance in the Div. III NCAA Tournament — and ninth consecutive — this weekend when the Ephs play host to Westfield State, St. Lawrence University and The College of New Jersey.
Williams (16-1-1), which won its seventh New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament championship Sunday via a 2-0 win over Bowdoin, will face-off against Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference champion Westfield State (10-6-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday in a first-round match-up.
"We love playing on Cole, but at this point in the season, we are just happy to be playing,' Ephs' head coach Michelyne Pinard said. "Only 64 teams in the country are able to say that and we don't take that for granted, we're thrilled to be playing, we're thrilled to be on Cole Field and we're looking to do whatever we can to earn another day together."
The second first-round game to be played in Williamstown will pit two teams which received at-large berths into the tournament, the St. Lawrence University Saints (13-4-2) and the College of New Jersey Lions (16-3-1).
Both teams suffered 2-1 overtime defeats in their conference championship games last weekend. The Saints fell 2-1 to William Smith in the Liberty League title tilt, while the Lions dropped a heartbreaker to Rowan College in the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship game. The Saints and Lions will play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Saturday's winners will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday to see who advances to the third round the following weekend.
Williams advanced to the Div. III national championship last year before losing to Lynchburg College in penalty kicks, 4-3.
Ticket prices are $6 for general admission, $3 for students and citizens, and $2 for children.
