WILLIAMSTON, MA – Williams women's Swim and Dive team defeated Springfield College 182-102 today at the Samuelson-Muir pool, kicking off their dual meet season with a 1-0 record. The women brought energy and heart to the pool, and started their season off strongly.
The Ephs opened the meet and set the tone with a win in the 200 medley relay, with the team comprised of Gabby Granata '22, Caroline White '20, Maia Hare '19, and Dana Chung '19 (1:49.53). The Ephs also placed second with their B relay, touching with a time of 1:52.45.
Stroke events were dominated by the younger Ephs, with the backstroke events lead by freshman Abby Matheny '22. She placed first in both the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke, going 1:01.80 and 2:08.46 respectively. Behind her in the 100 backstroke was Courtney Brown '21 (1:02.45), and placing second in the 200 back was Gabby Granata '22 (2:12.17). Another freshman, Anna Peterson '22, won the 100 and 200 butterfly in her first meet as an Eph (58.56 and 2:12.27).
In the freestyle events, the Ephs placed highly. Laura Westphal '21 opened her season with a win in the 200 freestyle, going 1:54.99, with freshman Emily Lock '22 touching second, and senior Victoria Chentsova '19 placing third. Senior Dana Chung '19 won the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.90, leading the way for second place Georgia Panitz '22 and third place Bryanna Lee '19.
Diver Gabriella Mercier '21 had a solid season opener, battling her way against divers with only two weeks of training under her belt. She placed second in both the 1 meter and 3 meter driving, competing a new dive on 1 meter, 105b.
Captain Kristina Barry '19 says, "It was very exciting to see everyone race for the first time this season. There were some great swims and lots of energy on deck so I can't wait to see what this team can do as the season progresses!" The purple cows travel tomorrow to battle Union College to continue their season, the meet starting at 1 PM EST.
