CLAREMONT, CA – The Williams College women's tennis team captured a 5-0 victory over host Claremont-M-S in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
In search of their fourth consecutive National Championship, the Ephs advance to tomorrow's semifinals where they will take on the University of Chicago Maroons. "This is the sixth year in a row that we are in the Final Four," said Coach Alison Swain "it's a huge accomplishment for our program and we are very excited for tomorrow."
The Ephs jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles matches. Leading the way for Williams was Lucy Marchese and Nikki Reich who earned a hard fought 9-8 (7-5), victory in the #1 spot. "Lucy and Nikki played great. This was a huge victory for us over a very strong doubles team," commented Swain.
In singles play, the Ephs were lead by junior Caroline Capute who cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #6. "I thought Caroline did a fantastic job. She played aggressive and confident tennis this afternoon and captured a big win for us," noted Swain.
Clinching the quarterfinal victory for Williams was Nancy Worley who came away with the 6-0, 6-2 win at the #2 spot. "Nancy, like Caroline, played aggressively and confidently," said Swain "she came away with a pivotal victory."
With the quarterfinal victory, the Ephs advance to take on the University of Chicago. The Ephs are familiar with their opponent from the Windy City as they dropped a 3-6 decision to Chicago earlier this season in the Fab 10 Tournament hosted by Emory University. At the conclusion of the Claremont-M-S match, Swain commented, " I am really excited for the rematch with Chicago. They are a great program and not only is it a rematch of the match played back in March, but it marks the second year in a row that we have met in the semis."
The Ephs (20-3) and the Maroons will begin play tomorrow at 2pm.
