LEWISTON, ME––Williams concluded their third and final day of the ITA/USTA New England Regional Championship. No. 3 Nancy Worley placed second in singles championship while Worley and her partner Kara Shoemaker also finished second in the doubles tournament.
Worley lost to Middlebury's Lok-Sze Leung 6-0, 6-1 in the final. Both Worley and Leung beat teammates to advance to the championship round. Worley defeated teammate Maria Pylypiv, 6-2, 6-1, and Leung beat Leah Kepping 6-1, 6-4 earlier in the day.
Williams lost to NESCAC-rival Amherst in the doubles competition. Worley and Shoemaker beat Amherst's Jennifer Newman and Zoe Pangalos 8-5 in the semifinals to advance to the championship, where they lost to Jordan Brewer and Laura Danzig, also by a score of 8-5. Brewer and Danzig had beaten Middlebury's Leung and Wilkey 9-7 to advance to the finals.
This year's tournament was a marked success for the Ephs. This was Shoemaker's and Pylypiv's first times at the tournament. Worley lost in the quarterfinals of the singles tournament and the round of 16 in the doubles the previous year.
Pylypiv entered the tournament unseeded and beat three seeded players, including the number two seed, to finish in the semifinals. Worley and Shoemaker also beat two seeded doubles teams before losing to the number one seeded player.
Head Coach Alison Swain feels that the tournament was "a great success for our team as a whole," and she is "very proud of Kara, Nancy, and Maria."
Williams will next play in the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). Williams will face many of the same teams again, including Middlebury and Amherst.The tournament will be held in Amherst, MA at Mount Holyoke and Smith. It begins on October 14th.
