INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Committee has selected the individuals that will compete in the singles and doubles competition of the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship.
The individual championship shall consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championship is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
Williams senior captain Kristin Alotta and sophomore Kara Shoemaker have been selected to compete in the singles tournament that follows the NCAA team competition being held May 21-23 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The singles and doubles championships will be held May 24-26.
Alotta, who plays number one singles for the Ephs recently eclipsed the 100-win plateau and now has 105 singles wins versus just 22 losses for a winning percentage of .827. A year ago Alotta advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA singles tourney.
Currently ranked #2 in the New England region, Alotta, a two-time All-American, is 10-2 in New England dual match play at number one singles play this year. "Over the course of the four years Kristin has added a lot of versatility to her game that's paid off in her ability to compete well against all different styles at number one singles," stated Eph head coach Alison Swain. "She's accomplished so much in her career that the individual tournament will be the icing on the cake for her."
Shoemaker who last year played sparingly in the Ephs' tournament tested lineup burst on the scene this fall by playing at number two singles. She is currently ranked sixth in the region and owns a 35-11 career singles mark.
"I can't say enough about Kara's improvement in less than a year," noted Swain. "She's become one of our most consistent competitors and it will be exciting to see what she can do in her first appearance in the individual tournament."
