AMHERST, MA – The Ephs will have three teams in the Semi Finals tomorrow at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). The second day of competition saw all four teams advance to the Quarters, with three advancing from there.
The format of NEWITT entails two singles matches and a doubles match to be played, with the team who won the majority of these matches advancing. Williams team 1 (Alotta/Curren) defeated Brandeis 3-0, Williams team 2 (Pylypiv/Elkins) defeated Simmons 3-0, Williams team 3 (Caputi/French) defeated Tufts 2-1, and Williams team 4 (Pastor/Thygesen, competing in the B flight) def. Curry 3-0. The format of the tournament required Morehouse Award winner, Taylor French to pull out an incredible singles match victory winning 6-3, 1-6, 10-7, propelling her and her teammate, Caroline Capute, to the quarters.
In the quarterfinals, Williams 2 rallied from a deficit in doubles, winning 6 games in a row, allowing them to advance to the Semi Finals tomorrow. Joining Pylypiv and Elkins in the A flight Semis will be Alotta/Curran, while Pastor and Thygesen will be competing in the B flight Semis as well. All semis will be played at 9am.
With three out of four pairs advancing to the Semi Finals tomorrow, Coach Swain reiterates that it is "a testament to the depth and strength of the team".
